Paradise

Today started with Dr. Wan giving us a thorough lesson in Malay music, playing us her favourite song and the one she once sang to her husband on the phone when he was away on business on their anniversary, while we fawned over her translations of the lyrics like proper romantics. I asked so many questions, and have a whole list of songs and traditional genres to look up. It ends with an early night, after video calling the respective families back home.

The middle bit, though? Taking a break from hard work we went to lunch – gorgeously spicy, sweet beef noodle soup and a yam, bubble-tea-like drink with black pearls of tapioca – at easily the most idyllic place I’ve ever been. We dined under palm trees.

Yeah, the middle bit of the day was definitely the best.
